2.2 Million People Queued for Switch 2 in Japan
Nintendo’s next-generation game console, Switch 2, is breaking records even before its release. A total of 2.2 million people participated in the pre-order application opened on MyNintendo in Japan. This number only includes online applications, and does not include reservations made in physical stores. Nintendo President Shuntaro Furukawa’s statements indicate that this unexpectedly high demand may cause some problems on the supply side. The company is making plans to increase its production capacity to meet this interest.
Switch 2 Pre-Orders Put Nintendo Under Pressure
According to Nintendo President Shuntaro Furukawa’s statements, the number of applications from MyNintendo users in Japan alone has exceeded 2.2 million. This number only includes digital applications; pre-orders in physical stores are not included in this data. Nintendo stated that it did not anticipate such high demand, and accepted that delays in deliveries were inevitable.
Furukawa also announced that users who were not selected after the first draw on April 24 will be automatically included in the second draw. Retailers will also start their own pre-order systems on the same day. However, according to the company’s statement, the total production capacity included in the second draw will not be enough to meet this intense demand. Therefore, many users who want to own the console will have to wait a little longer.
This intense interest in the Switch 2 also reveals that there is much higher demand than the previous model. In comparison, it is stated that the first Switch sold only 313 thousand units in Japan during its launch period, while the Switch 2 was demanded eight to nine times more. Nintendo announced that it has started working to increase its production capacity and deliver more products to retailers in order to manage this process.
This intensity has once again revealed the importance Nintendo attaches to the Japanese market. While foreign sales are affected by exchange rate risks, direct revenues in the domestic market are more advantageous for Nintendo. However, this situation may cause some delays for users in other regions. The company states that they are working hard to deliver on time to players around the world.
