Adam Driver Explains Why Star Wars Project Ended

In the Star Wars universe, it’s said that “no one truly perishes,” but apparently that doesn’t apply to Adam Driver. The renowned actor revealed that a film focusing on Ben Solo, also known as Kylo Ren, took two years to develop, but Disney canceled the project.

According to Driver, the film’s story was supposed to take place after the events of “The Rise of Skywalker.” Director Steven Soderbergh and screenwriter Scott Z. Burns were even attached to the project—until Bob Iger and Alan Bergman, wondering, “How can Ben Solo possibly be alive?”, called it quits.

In an interview, Driver said that the film, titled “The Hunt for Ben Solo,” would offer a different perspective on the Star Wars universe. According to the actor, the project was designed to be character-driven, more intimate, and more “hands-on.”

“The script was one of the coolest projects I’ve ever been involved with,” Driver said. “The Lucasfilm team loved the idea and completely understood why we were doing it. But the Disney executives didn’t understand the story. They couldn’t see how Ben Solo was alive, and that’s where it all ended.”

Driver stated that they aimed for a smaller-budget but emotionally powerful approach for the film. “Empire Strikes Back is still the standard for this franchise for me,” he said, adding that they wanted to stay true to the spirit of classic Star Wars.

Driver, who starred as Kylo Ren in the sequel trilogy that began in 2015, emphasized that while the character found redemption in the final film, he didn’t think his story was over. “After The Rise of Skywalker, I always wanted to come back. We’ve been talking about a new film since 2021,” he said.

Following Disney’s decision, the project was shelved entirely, but thousands of fans on social media called for “The Hunt for Ben Solo.” Some Star Wars fans believe that Ben Solo’s absence as a Force Ghost could be a sign that his return is still a possibility.

Meanwhile, the Star Wars cinematic universe has been in limbo for some time. Despite numerous announced projects, they have been canceled. The series’ return to the big screen is scheduled for 2026 with “The Mandalorian and Grogu.” “Star Wars: Starfighter,” starring Ryan Gosling, will be released in 2027.
