Why Was the Tomb Raider Series Canceled?

The news that the project was canceled emerged after Jennifer Salke, the president of Amazon MGM Studios, left her post. Salke was the one who brought Waller-Bridge into the project and had made great efforts to bring the series to life. However, despite these efforts, the Tomb Raider series could not make any concrete progress.

According to the Daily Mail, the project went through two different writing teams and despite the high development costs, the script could not be produced. Salke’s departure and Amazon’s decreasing interest in the project are among the reasons that brought the series to an end.

Phoebe Waller-Bridge was known for her performance in the Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny film and her success in the Fleabag series. In her statements about the Tomb Raider series, she stated that Lara Croft had an important place in her life since she was young and that she was very excited to bring this project to life. However, this excitement was not reflected enough in the project process.

Amazon has not completely lost its interest in the Tomb Raider universe. The company is working on a new Tomb Raider game in collaboration with Crystal Dynamics. Developed with Unreal Engine 5, this game is expected to offer an adventure full of puzzles and various enemies. However, the cancellation of the series has disappointed fans.
