Cancelled Contraband Images Leaked

Xbox’s canceled project, Contraband, is back in the spotlight. Steeped in mystery since its initial launch, the game was quietly shelved. However, new images surfacing online have reignited player curiosity and offered strong clues about the project’s original vision.

What Was Contraband Like?

Contraband was planned as a co-op-focused Xbox exclusive developed by Avalanche Studios. Leaked images suggest the game would feature a stylized visual world and a retro ’70s-inspired atmosphere. UI images, from character designs to menus, suggest the project was inspired by crime and smuggling-themed films of the era.

Another striking detail is the intended four-player mode. The team-based mission structure, map selection, and co-op logic suggest the game was designed to strengthen its social and strategic aspects. The map image, specifically titled “Downtown,” aimed to provide a vast and detailed gameplay platform that supports the open-world feel.

However, it’s unclear how close these images are to the final gameplay. Since the game was never shown with actual gameplay footage, these contents may be the clearest reference to the project’s conceptual phase. Nevertheless, the material revealed indicates that the project was developed with a serious vision and suggests missed potential.

While it hasn’t been officially canceled, the studio layoffs and the halting of development suggest that Contraband has likely been shelved. However, such projects are often resurrected after years, so the possibility of a surprise from Xbox isn’t entirely excluded. For now, all that remains is for players to ask, “What could have been?”
