Capcom to Continue Physical Media Production
Capcom has no plans to abandon physical media production, despite growing digital game sales. In a recent meeting with shareholders, the company stated that a significant portion of consumers still prefer physical disks and therefore has no plans to go completely digital.
The Balance Between Physical Media and Digital Sales
“Given that a significant portion of end users demand physical games, we do not expect to eliminate physical products at this time,” Capcom said. This decision is especially notable given that some of the studio’s recent AA games have been available only digitally. For example, while Capcom’s upcoming Dead Rising Deluxe Remaster will be available both digitally and at retail, there is no physical version of the Deluxe edition.
Digital sales have also changed the way Capcom prices its games. The company noted that digital stores allow them to sell games at retail for extended periods of time. For example, when Resident Evil Village came out, older games in the same series were reduced in price. Physical versions, on the other hand, continue to be sold in stores for about 6 months.
According to Capcom’s fiscal year 2023 report, more than 90% of the company’s software sales were digital, and this percentage is expected to increase. In 2022, 94% of all game sales will be digital, giving the medium a huge advantage over physical games. However, Capcom emphasized that it is not a good idea to completely eliminate physical media, noting that many gamers still prefer to buy games physically.
