Claws of Awaji DLC Was a Disappointment

Claws of Awaji, the first expansion for Assassin’s Creed Shadows, was not well-received by players. With rapidly declining ratings on Steam and mostly negative reviews, the DLC has been a major disappointment for fans of the series.

Reactions to the Claws of Awaji DLC

Players’ biggest complaint was the DLC’s lack of content. While Ubisoft promised a “10+ hour adventure,” many users reported completing the story in just three hours. Furthermore, the lack of any significant new features, aside from four new armors, four new weapons, and a single new area, further fueled this criticism. Many comments suggested that Claws of Awaji should have been a free update rather than a paid DLC.

Another point of criticism was technical issues. Players reported that some missions wouldn’t start or that progress was blocked due to bugs. Despite Ubisoft’s statement that “the DLC cannot be accessed until the game is completed,” it’s believed some users may have been misled. Nevertheless, the comments clearly indicated that the bugs significantly impacted the game’s enjoyment.

The DLC’s most striking innovation was the new weapon type, the bo staff. Most players agreed that this weapon added a fun twist to the combat mechanics. However, the lack of new features beyond the bo staff, which would add depth to the gameplay, left the expansion as nothing more than mere additional content. The phrase “Get it if you want to continue the story; otherwise, it’s not worth the wait” was frequently repeated in the comments.

While Ubisoft stated that they would take player feedback into account, the poor reception of Claws of Awaji dampened expectations for future expansions. Furthermore, this DLC was given free to players who pre-ordered Assassin’s Creed Shadows. However, despite being “free,” the negative reviews it has received are negatively impacting the game’s overall reception.

A new expansion pack for Assassin’s Creed Mirage is on the way soon. This time, the story will be set in the historic city of AlUla in Saudi Arabia. However, the dissatisfaction with Claws of Awaji suggests that Ubisoft needs to be more cautious with its new projects.
