Death Stranding 2 New Details

The Death Stranding sequel was originally announced in December 2022 via a reveal trailer that premiered at The Game Awards. In February 2024, developer Kojima Productions committed to launching Death Stranding 2 sometime in 2025.

Some additional information regarding the game’s premise and mechanics has now been revealed on the recently updated Death Stranding 2 PS Store page. The latest version of the listing mentions that the upcoming title will retain the Social Strand system from Death Stranding, stating that one’s actions will potentially affect how other players interact with the in-game world. It also promises open ended encounters, allowing players to decide how they want to approach both human enemies and mysterious entities alike.

On the subject of Death Stranding 2’s story, the PS Store page states that players should “expect the unexpected,” adding that Sam and his allies will embark on a mission to save humanity from extinction over the course of On the Beach. The question of whether humans should be connected in the game’s post apocalyptic world is officially characterized as being central to the plot. Granted, this doesn’t reveal much, as the first game also revolved around preventing an extinction event and explored the validity of maintaining human connections.

What’s going to be different this time around is that Death Stranding 2 will feature much more varied environments compared to its predecessor. Prior promo materials for the game already revealed a desert location, some mountainous terrain, aquatic environments, and at least one cityscape. Each biome will pose its own traversal challenges, most notably thanks to dynamic environmental effects such as rockslides and floods.

The game’s PS Store page was updated in the run-up to the Death Stranding 2 SXSW 2025 special panel at SXSW 2025, which is scheduled to take place on March 9. The festival event will see Hideo Kojima personally talk about the game, and based on some recent social media activity by his assistant, Ayako Terashima most likely reveal a new Death Stranding 2 trailer. A release date announcement is also on the cards, assuming the project is still targeting a 2025 launch.
