Diablo and Overwatch’s Missed Opportunity
Mike Ybarra, the former president of Blizzard Entertainment, wanted to make big changes to the company’s popular games Diablo 4 and Overwatch. According to Jason Schreier’s new book, Ybarra was planning to reduce microtransactions in Diablo 4 and reboot Overwatch. However, Ybarra’s departure from Blizzard prevented these plans from materializing.
Diablo 4 Microtransactions Wanted to be Reduced
In Jason Schreier’s book “Play Nice: The Rise, Fall, and Future of Blizzard Entertainment”, it is stated that Ybarra aims to reduce microtransactions for Diablo 4. The game has been under fire from players for its high-priced microtransactions. In particular, having to pay as high as an additional 25 dollars for cosmetic skins after purchasing the game frustrated many players. Ybarra wanted to reduce these costs, but his departure from Blizzard prevented these changes from being implemented. Diablo 4 generated over 150 million dollars in revenue from microtransactions alone, showing how profitable the game was.
There’s a Plan to Reboot Overwatch
The Overwatch series suffered a similar fate. After the disappointing launch of Overwatch 2, Ybarra wanted to reboot the series. Schreier emphasized that this step could be welcomed by the fans of the game, but it would mean a major restructuring and would put serious pressure on the developers. However, Ybarra’s departure caused these projects to stall.
Jason Schreier’s book reveals what kind of changes could happen after Ybarra’s departure from Blizzard. If Ybarra had been able to realize these plans, games like Diablo 4 and Overwatch could have been on a very different path.
