Disco Elysium Director Is a Fan of Fallout
Disco Elysium’s game director Robert Kurvitz expressed his admiration for the first Fallout game from 1997 during a broadcast. Stating that Fallout made the worlds of other post-apocalyptic games look “like an amusement park,” Kurvitz praised the game’s atmosphere and storytelling. Saying that Fallout offers a dark and deep depiction of humanity, Kurvitz stated that other games could not reach this level.
The Connection Between Disco Elysium and Fallout
Robert Kurvitz expressed his admiration for Fallout’s narrative structure by drawing attention to the game’s opening scenes. He stated that a skeleton in a Vault suit found in a cave at the beginning of Fallout tells the player a lot about the story. Kurvitz said that these details create the game’s dark atmosphere and that Fallout offers “an almost biblical sense of destruction.”
Stating that Fallout, unlike other post-apocalyptic games, deeply addresses the desperation of humanity, Kurvitz defined this narrative style as a “mood capsule.” He also humorously stated that Fallout 2 deals with issues such as social economy and trade more, and therefore Karl Marx’s favorite could be the second game.
Kurvitz stated that Fallout’s influence on story-focused games such as Disco Elysium is undeniable. Explaining narrative art with a “campfire” metaphor, Kurvitz stated that the real value of art lies in establishing a bond between people. He emphasized that Fallout is a powerful work that brings players together in this context.
Fallout’s impact on players and the gaming world is still felt for decades. Kurvitz’s words of praise once again revealed how important the game is. Fallout continues to set a standard for how post-apocalyptic worlds should be designed. That the creative team at Disco Elysium took inspiration from such classics speaks to the meticulous and deep approach to storytelling that Fallout has become, and continues to be, a cornerstone of gaming history and the present.
