Dune: Awakening Releases New MMO-Like Gameplay Video

Dune: Awakening brings Frank Herbert’s legendary sci-fi world to a massively multiplayer universe. Funcom introduced players to the game’s new gameplay video, which blends both survival and MMO mechanics. The game, set in the harsh conditions of Arrakis, leaves players with challenging tasks such as finding water, building shelter, and building a strong community. The game, scheduled for release in 2025, allows players to write their own stories.

Dune: Awakening Takes Place in an Alternate Timeline

Funcom designed the game to stay true to Frank Herbert’s works, while creating an alternate timeline to avoid conflicting with Denis Villeneuve’s films. In this universe, Paul Atreides was never born, Lady Jessica gave birth to a daughter, and Duke Atreides survived the Harkonnen attack. This gives players the freedom to shape their own stories as they embark on an epic journey on Arrakis.

The game includes story and lore elements inspired by the first six books in the Dune series. However, the focus will be on large-scale faction conflicts and interactions that players shape together. The early stages of the game focus on survival, while later on, political and commercial strategies will come to the fore.

Dune: Awakening features a four-stage progression system: Survival (1-10 hours), Protection (10-30 hours), Expansion (30-100 hours), and Control (100+ hours). After completing basic survival tasks, players will have the opportunity to change the dynamics of the game with water trading, spice extraction, and faction political decisions. Exploring the terrain while avoiding sandworms, fighting enemies, and gathering resources are also important mechanics of the game.

The game is based on Holtzman shields, staying true to the Dune universe. While ranged attacks are blocked by shields, shields can be bypassed with the “slow blade” mechanics used in close combat. In addition, gathering and using spices becomes an important strategic element in the later stages of the game, providing players with temporary buffs.

Dune: Awakening aims to offer players both an individual and community-focused experience by combining the MMO and survival genres. It has been announced that beta registrations have begun ahead of the full release in 2025. Science fiction fans are preparing to survive the harsh conditions of Arrakis and write their own stories.
