End of Abyss Comes With Surprises
Although overshadowed by the big productions that attracted attention at Summer Game Fest 2025, End Of Abyss quietly managed to be one of the most interesting experiences. Although it may seem like a typical top-down shooter at first glance, the atmosphere, exploration structure and narrative of the game make it a unique interpretation of the classic metroidvania genre.
Familiar Genre Reborn with Unusual Presentation in End Of Abyss
Developed by Section 9 Interactive, End Of Abyss reminds us of Helldivers-style arcade gameplay with its isometric camera, but in terms of content, it is much more closely related to “search action” games such as Resident Evil 2, Alien: Isolation and Super Metroid. In the game, we try to survive in dark corridors full of mutants in an abandoned underground complex as a young technician named Cel.
The exploration-based progression system encourages the player to constantly search for new tools and paths. It is not enough to just find a key to open locked doors; it is necessary to first open the paths that will allow you to reach that key. The player examines clues with a scanner, resists enemies with simple weapons, and faces a new danger at every step in the dark atmosphere. Sometimes we fend off parasites crawling in sewer waters, and sometimes we engage in combat with giant mutant hands.
The experience offered by End Of Abyss combines the loneliness of dark platform games such as Limbo and Inside with the alert progress of Resident Evil. However, when all these familiar elements are presented from an overhead perspective in the style of a twin-stick shooter, an experience that is both nostalgic and completely different emerges. Every moment of the gameplay feels both familiar and surprising; this is one of the strongest aspects of the game.
While End Of Abyss offers an experience full of classics for those who love the genre, it draws attention by bringing a new aesthetic and structural interpretation. Although a familiar story is told in the background, the presentation style and gameplay structure make this experience anything but ordinary. For players who love horror and exploration together, this game should be on the radar list now.
