Former Assassin’s Creed Boss: “I Didn’t Leave, I Was Dismissed!”
Marc-Alexis Côté, the former head of Ubisoft’s legendary Assassin’s Creed series, announced that he was dismissed from his position by the company, not voluntarily. This announcement, made following the newly established Tencent-backed Vantage Studios, has sparked new discussions about the future of the series.
How Was Marc-Alexis Côté Removed from Assassin’s Creed?
Last week, Ubisoft announced Côté’s departure from the company, stating that he was “pursuing another career path.” However, Côté explained in a statement on LinkedIn that the situation was different. According to his statement, Ubisoft had decided to hand over the leadership of the Assassin’s Creed series to someone more aligned with the company’s new organizational structure.
Côté stated that he was offered another position, but that it had a more limited scope of authority than his previous role. The producer emphasized that he therefore declined the new role, clarifying, “This wasn’t my choice. Ubisoft asked me to step down.”
The producer also stated that he holds no resentment toward Ubisoft. Côté, who stated that the company has been his entire career, said, “However, I must be honest with my team and the people I’ve worked with in the past. I didn’t leave, I was dismissed.”
Marc-Alexis Côté had worked at Ubisoft for nearly two decades, playing a key role in the series’ development since the Assassin’s Creed Brotherhood era. With the establishment of Vantage Studios, major franchises like Assassin’s Creed, Far Cry, and Rainbow Six Siege were now under the responsibility of this new studio. Côté’s departure is seen as the first major impact of this restructuring.
