Former Disco Elysium Creators Create New RPG: Tangerine Antarctic
The former creators of Disco Elysium, which achieved cult status in the gaming world, have embarked on a new path under the name Dark Math Games. The studio initially worked on an isometric project, but with the announcement of Tangerine Antarctic, a major shift in focus, the new game has garnered considerable attention. This move has generated considerable interest both in terms of genre and narrative.
A New Beginning with Tangerine Antarctic
Dark Math Games’ first project was initially planned as an isometric game called XXXNightshift. However, the development team radically revamped the project, transforming it into a third-person role-playing game. The game’s name has been updated to Tangerine Antarctic. The story takes place in a hotel in a ski village in Antarctica. A blizzard strands the characters, and a murder takes place, becoming the central focus of the story.
Despite this change, the connection to Disco Elysium remains intact. In a short gameplay trailer, the studio revealed that the player engages in dialogue with their own internal motivations. Conversations with inner voices like curiosity and ambition drive the game, much like Disco Elysium’s iconic skill system. The developers also promise an engaging narrative, stating that the hotel in the game will act as a character.
Dark Math Games’ announcement garnered attention alongside other previous ZA/UM projects that emerged on the same day. Longdue studio is developing a story-driven isometric CRPG called Hopetown. Set in a mining town, the game is shaped by the collapse of communications systems following a global geomagnetic storm. The project quickly raised over €135,000.
Furthermore, while Summer Eternal hasn’t yet announced a game, it has made a name for itself by publishing a manifesto against the profit-driven mindset within the industry. Meanwhile, Disco Elysium creator Robert Kurvitz and art director Alexander Rostov haven’t announced any new projects, but they continue to support other independent productions. Rue Valley, an isometric RPG, has become one of the projects that stands out, having received their approval.
