Games Aren’t Expensive, Says Former PlayStation Boss
While the recent price increases in the gaming world have drawn the ire of gamers, some names from the industry continue to defend this increase. Especially with Mario Kart World’s $80 tag, the price discussions have grown with the productions such as The Outer Worlds 2 and Borderlands 4 that followed. However, former PlayStation boss Shuhei Yoshida sees this situation differently and states that some games deserve this price.
Yoshida: “$80 Games Should Be Evaluated According to Their Fun”
Yoshida said in the Kit & Krysta podcast that he participated in that not every game should be evaluated with the same price. Giving the example of Mario Kart World, Yoshida argued that such games offer hundreds of hours of fun and therefore the extra fee is reasonable. He stated that players should make their purchasing decisions based on the duration and quality of the fun offered.
The former manager’s statements were not limited to just price defense. Yoshida stated that today’s gaming market is actually quite accessible. “There are thousands of cheap games, so $80 games are not as scary as you think,” he said. Although he admitted that services like Xbox Game Pass have facilitated this transition, it is noteworthy that PlayStation does not add big games to PS Plus on the day they are released.
In another program, Yoshida described $70-$80 games as “opportunities” according to the amount of content they offer. He argued that when compared to cinema or other forms of entertainment, high-end games offer long-term entertainment and are worth their price in this respect. However, it is not ignored that additional fees such as pre-order content, early access advantages and first-day DLCs make it difficult for players to make purchasing decisions.
