GTA 6 is experiencing a union crisis
As GTA 6 nears its release, an unexpected crisis has surfaced at Rockstar Games. Allegations that some team members were laid off have sparked widespread outcry in the gaming world. This situation, which occurred in the final stages of development, has rekindled discussions about the work environment and unionization within the studio. While the details of the process are still unclear, all eyes are on official statements.
GTA 6 Team Allegations of Mass Layoffs
According to a report published by Bloomberg, 30 to 40 employees at Rockstar Games have been laid off. These individuals were allegedly participating in a closed union chat group on Discord. The employees were reportedly terminated for “misconduct.” The dismissed employees were reportedly from teams in the UK and Canada.
The Independent Workers’ Union of Great Britain (IWGB) described the incidents as “an attempt to thwart unionization.” The statement claimed that this was one of the most aggressive anti-union actions ever seen in the gaming industry. The simultaneous dismissal of the employees and their presence in a union-focused chat group were cited as factors that bolstered the union’s claims.
Take-Two denied the allegations and stated that the decision was made due to “serious violations.” The company stated that all dismissals were carried out in accordance with the procedure. However, the fact that all employees were dismissed at the same time has fueled ongoing discussions about the process. No additional details have been released internally, beyond official statements.
Rockstar Games has largely been unaffected by the widespread layoffs in the industry in recent years. However, Take-Two cut 5 percent of its workforce in 2024. This situation, which occurred during a critical phase of GTA 6’s development, has raised new questions about the project’s working order. Monitoring of the studio’s internal dynamics is ongoing.
