Halo Infinite’s Secret Project Project Olympus Revealed

The long-rumored development of the Halo series has been resurfaced with a new video. This secret project, codenamed “Project Olympus” and later canceled, revealed that Halo Infinite was being designed differently. The leaked documentary-style video revealed numerous details, from canceled gameplay mechanics to story plans, and reminded players that the series could have a different future.

Project Olympus Reveals

The shared video reveals that much more ambitious ideas were actually on the table during Halo Infinite’s development. Plans to transition to Unreal Engine were discussed, but the decision was made to remain in Slipspace. Now, the transition to Unreal Engine for new installments in the series demonstrates the critical nature of those decisions. This demonstrates that Halo’s technical difficulties are long-standing.

The “socket system” planned for Project Olympus’s multiplayer was another noteworthy feature. This system would allow players to assume different roles and experience a class-based experience with camouflage, rocket pods, or special abilities. Furthermore, the planned customization system for weapons and vehicles offered an innovative structure that would increase the game’s diversity. Had these ideas been implemented, Halo’s multiplayer landscape could be vastly different today.

Another prominent element in the video was the plan to transition Halo to a live service model. Project Olympus, scheduled for release in 2019, aimed to abandon the traditional “new game every three years” approach and instead deliver continuous content. This approach could have radically changed the series’ presence in the gaming world. However, uncertainties and developmental difficulties within the project prevented this goal from being realized.

Project Olympus’s narrative side appeared to be planning a “spiritual rebirth.” This vision, which aims to return the series to its roots after Halo 5’s controversial storyline, could be promising for fans. However, due to the studio’s ongoing crises, these plans never materialized. Still, today’s footage offers an intriguing glimpse into what an alternative Halo future could have looked like.
