How Sam Altman Captured Hollywood
Some of Hollywood’s biggest players are closely watching the impact of OpenAI CEO Sam Altman’s new video app, Sora 2. This platform, which Altman touts as “creative freedom,” has begun to completely redraw the boundaries of AI in the world of film and television. However, this transformation is also sparking debates about copyright and artists’ rights.
Sam Altman Shakes Up Hollywood with Sora 2
Prior to the release of Sora 2, there was considerable uncertainty among Hollywood agencies. Allegations that OpenAI allowed content imitating famous characters and faces without permission from studios sent a chill down the industry. Agencies like WME, CAA, and UTA distrusted Altman’s promise that the “opt-in” system would protect artists’ visual and audio rights, and they claimed they were not informed about the process.
Disney and other major studios have harshly criticized the company’s policies. Some senior executives at WME, in particular, have declared that Altman’s “make it first, apologize later” approach is dangerous. OpenAI’s creation of a platform where users can freely use movie and game characters has reignited Hollywood’s fight to protect copyright.
Altman’s camp, however, argues that these criticisms are unfair. OpenAI executives claim Sora 2 is “a new form of interaction that allows fans to create creative content.” Altman stated, “This platform is a new way to create value for studios. We are strengthening the connection between fans and creators.” However, legal experts believe this approach “reverses copyright law.”
Hollywood is currently divided: One side sees Altman’s move as an inevitable development in the digital transformation, while others see it as a threat to artists’ work. While the number of lawsuits initiated by Disney is increasing, studios are also exploring ways to collaborate with AI. Despite all the criticism, Sam Altman continues to position Sora 2 as the “future of entertainment.”
