Is the Nintendo Virtual Boy Really a Classic?

The Nintendo Direct presentation featured many surprises, from Mario games to new movies, but the Virtual Boy announcement was the most surprising moment for viewers. Released in 1995 and quickly shelved, the device was known for its red-and-black 3D visuals, which caused dizziness and eyestrain. The console, which was not sold outside of Japan and North America, featured only 22 games and was discontinued less than a year later.

The Return of the Virtual Boy

Nintendo is preparing to offer 14 “classic” Virtual Boy games to Switch Online + Expansion Pack subscribers. These include Mario’s Tennis, Galactic Pinball, and Jack Bros. However, the experience requires an additional accessory: either a $99 plastic Virtual Boy replica or a $24.99 cardboard version. Both options will feature special lenses that mimic the stereoscopic 3D effect.

The Virtual Boy’s resurgence surprised many fans. Comments on the YouTube announcement video frequently pointed out that the device’s disturbing design was still remembered and that the move was controversial. Despite this, it’s no surprise that Nintendo’s retro fascination and loyal fanbase will see this relaunch gain traction.

Nintendo’s re-release of a product that has failed in the past demonstrates the brand’s ability to play with its legacy. It’s a risk no other company would readily take. Ultimately, through the power of nostalgia, the Virtual Boy could be reborn as a “classic” or relegated to the dustbin of history.

Gamers eager to experience this experience will not only satisfy their curiosity but also have the opportunity to revisit one of Nintendo’s most controversial products.
