James Gunn Delights Superman Fans with Early Surprise

James Gunn surprised Superman fans with his comments at the premiere of Peacemaker Season 2, which premieres on HBO Max on August 21st. The director stated that he has completed the script draft for the next installment of the “Superman saga” and wants to begin filming soon. Gunn’s approach reveals his plans to continue the series at full speed following the success of the first DCU film.

A New Era in the Superman Universe

Gunn had previously stated that the new film would not be a direct sequel to this summer’s blockbuster Superman. However, both his own statements and those of Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav clarify that the story will take place within the “Super Family.” This suggests that next year’s Supergirl film could serve as an important bridge.

Gunn’s strategy, based on narrow-scope yet in-depth character development, aims to solidify the foundations of the DCU. Unlike Marvel’s expansive ensemble strategy, Gunn’s approach could allow audiences to more easily adapt to the new universe. The dynamic between Kara Zor-El and Clark Kent, even in brief scenes in the previous film, captivated fans.

While future DCU projects include Clayface, the Lanterns series, Supergirl, and many more, Gunn’s current focus remains on the Superman universe. The first film’s $583 million global box office success demonstrates that this decision is also a sound commercial choice.

While a specific start date for production on the new Superman film hasn’t been announced, Gunn’s emphasis on “not too far away” suggests that filming could begin as early as 2026. Fans are eagerly awaiting David Corenswet’s return to the iconic blue suit and a potential crossover adventure with Kara Zor-El.
