John Carter Animated Series Coming
The John Carter film, released in 2012 and underwhelming at the box office, is returning after years in a completely different format. Edgar Rice Burroughs’ classic stories, based on the Barsoom universe, will be brought to the screen as an animated series. The announcement, made at San Diego Comic-Con, ushered in a new era for John Carter fans.
The John Carter Universe is Being Revived
The new animated series will bring to the screen the classic stories of Burroughs’ Barsoom series. The first images and details about the project were shared during a special panel at San Diego Comic-Con. Showrunner Michael Kogge stated that the series will follow in the footsteps of modern fantasy franchises like Castlevania and Blood of Zeus.
The Barsoom universe began with the 1912 novel A Princess of Mars. The story unfolds when American Civil War veteran John Carter is transported to Mars (Barsoom). There, he finds love, encounters extraordinary creatures and peoples, and becomes involved in an epic war.
Kogge is joined in the series’ production team by Jim Sullos and Wolf Larson, who manage Burroughs’ legacy. Kogge’s previous work on audio stories set in this universe demonstrates the series’ commitment. With the 11-book Barsoom series, the animated series could become a long-term project.
While a streaming platform or release date has not yet been announced, the John Carter animated series is expected to breathe new life into the fantasy-action genre. The hope is that this classic story will be taken to a whole new level, especially with the creative freedom offered by modern animation.
