Joke But True: Shrek Joins Sonic Racing
Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds is far from just a Sonic game. Featuring familiar faces from SEGA’s various franchises, along with unexpected characters like SpongeBob, the game has become a virtual “Sonic’s Fortnite.” However, the surprise that’s been buzzing lately is a name no one would have thought of: Shrek.
Shrek Surprise in Sonic Racing
Mod developer Hallow has successfully added Shrek to the game with a special add-on shared through Nexus Mods. The character is placed as a skin on Dr. Eggman, and the tagline reads, “Shrek races to save his family from bankruptcy.” The resulting image is both absurd and surprisingly cohesive. Players can easily imagine Shrek bickering with Shadow or hanging out with Big the Cat.
Even at launch, Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds has already expanded far beyond the Sonic universe. The game has already brought in characters like Hatsune Miku, Ichiban from Yakuza, Joker from Persona 5, Minecraft characters Steve, Alex, and Creeper, and even SpongeBob and Patrick. And that’s not all; it’s already confirmed that many characters, including Mega Man, Pac-Man, Avatar: The Last Airbender, and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, will be joining the game in future updates.
Shrek’s lack of prominence in the Sonic world is actually surprising. His colorful and humorous personality perfectly matches the game’s over-the-top and fun tone. Perhaps that’s why players have begun to welcome Shrek’s presence beyond the confines of a “mod” as an official collaboration. This even raises the possibility that SEGA will actually add Shrek to the game in the future.
The future of Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds looks set to be filled with even more surprises and wild character collaborations. Shrek’s unexpected debut has proven once again how freeing and fun gaming has become. Who knows, maybe one day Shrek, Hatsune Miku, and Knuckles will actually race side by side on the same track.
