Latest PS5 Sales Revealed
PS5 sold total of 65.5 million worldwide. Since its initial release in November 2020, the PlayStation 5 has seen continued success, continuing the legacy cemented by previous iterations of Sony’s home video game console.
Big Success for PS5 Console
Announced in 2019 and launched in 2020, the PS5 instantly wowed players with its impressive graphics, unique DualSense controller, and improved performance over its predecessor. Despite having relatively few games at launch, the ones made available became fast favorites for large portions of the community, including the preinstalled platformer Astro’s Playroom and the action adventure title Spider-Man: Miles Morales. Four years after the console’s release, Sony is giving an update on how well the PS5 is performing, and the results are somewhat unsurprising.
In its Q2 results for fiscal year 2024, Sony revealed that over 65.5 million PlayStation 5 consoles have been shipped globally to date. This is in line with sales of the PlayStation 4, which had sold 67.7 million consoles at the same point in its lifecycle. Additionally, the report noted that 3.8 million PS5 consoles were sold in Q2 itself, which represents 1.1 million fewer units when compared to the same quarter during the previous fiscal year. However, the company reported that game sales have increased, with 77.7 million PlayStation 5 games sold during Q2. 5.3 million of these were first party titles.
The majority of games sold for the PS5 in Q2 were digital, with 70 percent of gamers preferring to skip out on physical media. The monthly number of users on the PlayStation Network was reported to be 116 million, which hasn’t changed when compared to last quarter’s results. Unfortunately, Sony stopped reporting PlayStation Plus subscriber numbers in November 2023, though the service is likely continuing to be a huge draw for many, especially fans of classic titles. As of March 2023, the PS Plus subscription service had over 47.4 million members.
On November 7, Sony released the PlayStation 5 Pro, which features an upgraded GPU, advanced ray tracing capabilities, and AI-driven upscaling to support higher fidelity graphics and smoother frame rates. Along with many PS5 titles being enhanced for the new console, the system will also support PS5 Pro Game Boost, which will improve the performance and graphics of over 8,500 backward compatible titles from the previous generation. Recent rumors imply that the PlayStation 6 will be released in 2028, though no word on the company’s next console has officially been announced.
