Mods Can Undo Censorship in Ready or Not
Ready or Not developer Void Interactive has faced significant player backlash over recent censorship changes to the game. The console version of the game required an ESRB rating to offer cross-platform support, and as a result, some content was removed from the PC version.
Ready or Not Will Bring Back Original Content with Mod Support
Void Interactive stated in a statement that the removal of some scenes from the PC version of the game was solely for compatibility with the console versions. Specifically, sections containing nudity and excessive violence were removed due to the ESRB rating. Following these changes, Steam reviews quickly dropped to “Generally Negative.”
In an effort to mitigate the backlash, a developer named “Kaminsky” announced on Void’s Discord server that players will be able to reinstate content removed through mod support. While some players welcomed this change, others argued that this could be achieved through an in-game “on/off” option.
However, the development team believes this is technically impossible. According to the ESRB, if content is already in the game by default, simply disabling it with an option isn’t sufficient. Therefore, mod support is presented as a way to give players freedom without violating legal boundaries.
Cross-platform support will likely fail if mods are used. Therefore, players will be forced to choose between restoring old content and losing online play compatibility. Void Interactive, however, believes the criticism is overblown and maintains that this solution offers a balanced approach for everyone.
