New Information Arrived About the Sleeping Dogs Movie
The long-shut Sleeping Dogs movie is once again in the news. Simu Liu, who will play the lead role, confirmed in a social media post that the first draft of the film’s script has been completed. This marks the completion of a significant milestone for the project, based on the 2012 cult open-world game.
Simu Liu Announces Completion of the Sleeping Dogs Movie Script
Simu Liu shared two photos on his X (Twitter) account: one of his sleeping dog Chopa, and the other of the official Sleeping Dogs script. The actor captioned the post, “First draft complete,” indicating that the film’s development is further along than expected. A notable detail is the anonymity of the script’s author, leading to speculation that a surprise director or screenwriter may be involved in the project.
Released in 2012, Sleeping Dogs received critical acclaim for its crime-themed story set in Hong Kong, melee-focused mechanics, and parkour-based gameplay. However, poor sales led to the cancellation of the sequels. Despite this, the series has managed to cultivate a dedicated fan base over the years.
Simu Liu will play the main character, Wei Shen, and will also serve as producer. Liu has previously proven his prowess in the martial arts-themed action genre with his performance in Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings. Therefore, he is considered a prime candidate for a Sleeping Dogs adaptation.
Hollywood had previously attempted to develop the project, with Donnie Yen even briefly being linked to the lead role. However, the project was ultimately canceled. Simu Liu’s direct involvement in the production process now bolsters hopes that Sleeping Dogs will truly become a reality. Casting and filming are currently underway.
