Nexus Mods Brings Age Verification

Nexus Mods, one of the most used platforms by modders and gamers for years, is undergoing a major transformation process. It has been announced that serious changes will be made to the site’s usage policies in line with the online security laws of the European Union and the United Kingdom. The most important of these is the age verification application. While the protection of young users is especially aimed, comprehensive innovations are also planned in the content moderation and user interaction systems.

Nexus Mods is Moving to Age Verification and Content Regulation

According to Nexus Mods’ statement, the site has new obligations within the scope of the European Union’s Digital Services Act (DSA) and the United Kingdom’s Online Safety Act. The most important of these obligations is age verification, and it is not yet clear how exactly this system will work. Will it be a simple “I’m 18” box, or will verification with an official document be required? While users are looking for answers to these questions, the privacy aspect of possible identity verification processes is also being discussed.

However, it is also planned to remove illegal or sensitive content from the site. A new labeling system will be introduced for content classified under headings such as pornography, suicide, and depression. In addition, pornographic images can only be shared as part of a paid supporter membership. These steps are considered important, especially in terms of protecting young users.

The platform’s user interaction system is also being updated. The old “Block Author” feature is being removed and replaced with the “Ignore” system. Now, the person who ignores a user will not be able to comment on or interact with the content shared by that person. This step aims to provide users with a safer environment to share content.

All of these changes coincide with the change of ownership of Nexus Mods a few weeks ago. The new management states that it has started this process to fully comply with the laws. Former owner Dark0ne emphasized in a statement that these laws are mandatory and that they could face heavy fines if they are not implemented.

Users have mixed reactions to these developments. While some users support the goal of protecting children, others are cautious due to privacy concerns. But one thing is certain: Nexus Mods will no longer be on the agenda just with its mods, but also with its rules.
