Nintendo Laughs at Console Wars

Legendary game director Shigeru Miyamoto made striking statements about Nintendo‘s participation in the console wars. Nintendo, which prefers to stay out of the competition between Xbox and PlayStation, has been following a unique path with this strategy for many years. Miyamoto’s statements on this subject also overlap with the Nintendo Museum to be opened in Kyoto.

Nintendo Stands Against Console Wars

Opening on October 2nd in Kyoto, Japan, the Nintendo Museum will celebrate and preserve the company’s unique history. In an interview with Famitsu, Shigeru Miyamoto said that he hopes the museum will help better understand Nintendo’s values and strategy. In particular, Miyamoto drew attention to Nintendo’s refusal to get involved in the “console wars”, stating that they consciously chose to stay away from such competition.

Miyamoto said that “Nintendo tries not to get involved in competitions that focus on high hardware specs” and expressed his hope that people will be able to better understand Nintendo’s philosophy through the museum. For many years, Nintendo has focused on innovative gaming experiences rather than technological superiority, unlike rivals such as PlayStation and Xbox.

Nintendo’s strategy has been largely successful. Nintendo Switch has become Nintendo’s second most successful console, selling 143.42 million units. As the best-selling console behind the Nintendo DS, the Switch brought a whole new form factor to the world of handheld gaming and led other companies to follow suit.

The fact that Nintendo has been so successful by following a different path from its competitors proves that Miyamoto’s strategy was right. The Nintendo Museum will reveal the story behind this success.

Do you think Nintendo’s strategy of staying away from the competition will be successful in the long run?
