Nintendo Switch 2 Leak Shows Joycons With Rear Pedals
Rumors and leaks about Nintendo’s new console, the Nintendo Switch 2, are continuing apace. Finally, photos have surfaced on Chinese video sharing site Bilibili that appear to show the Switch 2’s Joy-Con controllers.
Nintendo Switch 2 Leaks Don’t Stop There
Nintendo has confirmed that its new console will be backwards compatible, but rumors also suggest that it will feature magnetic Joy-Con controllers and roughly the same specs as the Xbox Series S.
The leaked video from Bilibili shows two IR sensors on the bottom of the controllers, larger SL and SR buttons, and a mysterious extra paddle or trigger on the back. It’s unclear whether this is a button or a mechanism to disconnect the console.
The fact that the Joy-Con are magnetic is one of the few details about the Switch 2 that multiple sources have mentioned. However, while images of the console and controllers have leaked online before, there’s been no confirmation that these are real.
You can find the images here.
The photos allegedly come from a factory worker in China. That’s where the leak is expected to come from as the Switch 2 enters full production and Nintendo begins stocking up for its launch.
Of course, this doesn’t guarantee that the photos are real. While some fans are expecting the Switch 2 to be physically very similar to the current model, Nintendo hasn’t said anything about it.
It seems likely that the thing on the back is there to separate the Joy-Con from the main console. On current models, this is done with a small button on top, so it’s not clear why something larger would be needed.
Another possibility is that it’s an analog trigger for racing games. Unlike the Xbox and PlayStation, the Switch 2’s shoulder buttons aren’t analog, which doesn’t add much nuance to racing games.
It would be nice to change that with the Switch 2, but if Nintendo is concerned about backwards compatibility, it may have decided to add a completely new button rather than swap out the existing buttons.
While there’s a slight chance that Nintendo Switch 2 news will be announced at The Game Awards next week, the most likely scenario right now is that the new console won’t be officially revealed until January or February, so we won’t know for sure until then.
