PlayStation 5 Can Run PS3 Games

When a new console is released, one of the first things gamers wonder about is backward compatibility. PlayStation doesn’t have a great track record in this regard. The PS5 can officially only run most of the previous-gen PS4 games. However, recent tests have shown that emulating PS3 games on the PS5 is possible.

PlayStation 5 Experiment Successful

A YouTuber named “Lowest Logan” has found a way to emulate PS3 games on his PS5. Sony’s claim that it is impossible to port PS3 games to the PS5 has long been accepted due to the special technology used. Logan conducted an experiment using an AMD BC-250 and PS5 silicon, and the results are impressive.

Logan successfully emulated PS3 games like Gran Turismo 5: Prologue and Little Big Planet 3. The games appear to run quite smoothly. This experimental study undermines Sony’s claim that the PS5 cannot run PS3 games.

Access to PS3 games on the PS5 is currently quite limited. A handful of PS3 games are available digitally via cloud streaming for PS Plus Premium members. While more PS2-era games have been added to the PS5 store, access to PS3-era games is still limited.

Logan’s test also lends credence to rumors that Sony is working on bringing more PS3 games to the new console. This has been a topic that gamers have been discussing for a while now. Sony’s decision to cancel plans to close the PS3 store due to fan backlash suggests that the era of online PS3 game purchases is only a matter of time before it’s over.

For now, the idea of a large library of PS3 games being offered on the PS5 remains a rumor. However, at least one YouTuber has proven that it’s possible to get these older games to run on the new hardware with some modifications. It wouldn’t be surprising if Sony were to work on a solution that would strike a balance between ending support for the PS3 store and keeping its customers happy.
