PlayStation 6 Won’t Be All-Digital
Former PlayStation executive Shawn Layden announced that the PlayStation 6 will not be a fully digital console. Layden stated that PlayStation had to continue supporting physical games due to its large user base worldwide. He stated that although digital game sales are increasing, demand for physical media is still strong.
Even If You Have a PlayStation 6, Physical Media Is Important
Despite the significant increase in digital game sales in recent years, it is emphasized that physical games still hold an important place for major brands like PlayStation. Shawn Layden said that considering PlayStation’s large market in over 100 countries, a fully digital console could lead to the loss of millions of users.
Layden also stated that physical games are especially critical for users with limited access to the internet. For example, athletes or people who travel frequently, such as soldiers, prefer physical discs to be able to play games without internet access.
In the current generation, Sony offered a PS5 Digital Edition model without a disc drive. Similarly, Microsoft also launched the fully digital Xbox Series S. However, according to Layden, since PlayStation’s market size is much larger than Xbox, it is difficult for Sony to fully adopt this strategy. The launch of the PS5 Pro as a disc drive-free model has also brought this debate to the agenda again. However, Layden thinks that PlayStation 6 will not completely eliminate physical media support.
It is not yet known what kind of hardware the PlayStation 6 will come with. However, Layden’s statements show that Sony will not completely abandon the physical game market. This proves that physical media still has its place in the age of digitalization. Sony is expected to continue to appeal to a wide range of users with a strategy that supports both digital and physical games.
