PlayStation and Bungie Partnership
Following Sony’s acquisition of Bungie a couple of years ago, the SIE Live Service Center of Excellence has been a little under the radar. However, the partnership is still ongoing and new developments are taking place. Bungie’s Bridget O’Neill announced that PlayStation is forming the core of Bungie’s creative team to support live service games. O’Neill said that this partnership presents a great opportunity to share experience with other studios developing live-service games.
Bungie and PlayStation Partnership
Since acquiring Bungie, Sony has made several attempts at live service games. Games like Helldivers 2 and Concord have been released, but with mixed success. Also on the way is Fairgame$ from Haven Studio and Bungie’s new game Marathon. During the same period, The Last of Us multiplayer spin-off project was canceled.
Bringing Bungie’s expertise in live-service gaming to the PlayStation ecosystem provides a significant advantage in the development of new games. According to O’Neill, live-service gaming is a challenging and highly competitive market. Therefore, PlayStation and Bungie’s collaboration has the potential to make a big difference in the industry.
Since Sony acquired Bungie, there have been some changes in the team. After layoffs at the beginning of the year, 220 Bungie employees lost their jobs and 155 were integrated into Sony. However, it was announced that Bungie will continue to release DLC for Destiny 2 until 2026 and continue to work on Marathon.
Following the announcement of Sony’s live service center, efforts to learn from Bungie accelerated. Although Helldivers 2 was a success, some projects like Concord may have fallen short of expectations. However, this partnership is an important start for PlayStation in the field of live service games.
