Squadron 42’s Release Date Still Uncertain
Squadron 42, announced as Star Citizen’s single-player campaign, has been subject to numerous delays since 2014. While Cloud Imperium Games reaffirmed its 2026 release date in recent months, comments from studio content director Jared Huckaby have sparked a new wave of concern in the community.
Squadron 42’s 2026 Target Is Debatable
During the latest Star Citizen Live stream, Huckaby stated, “We’ve drawn a line for 2026, and I don’t know if we’ll make it, but we’ll do our best.” While this statement wasn’t a deliberate delay, it deepened fans’ doubts about the game’s timely release. The complete absence of Squadron 42 from CitizenCon was interpreted as a negative sign by players.
In comments shared on Reddit, many players suggested another delay could occur until 2027. Some users also noted that the lack of marketing had dampened expectations for the game’s release. However, Huckaby later clarified that his words had been misunderstood and that he simply meant “no one can guarantee the future of game development.”
Considering Squadron 42’s history, such reactions are not surprising. The game was unveiled with a nearly completed episode in 2015, beta testing was said to begin in 2020, and it was declared “feature-complete” in 2023. Despite all this progress, however, a definitive release date remains elusive.
Nevertheless, the Cloud Imperium Games team emphasizes their continued faith in the project. When the game launches, it will welcome a strong cast, supported by the likes of Gary Oldman, Gillian Anderson, and Mark Hamill. The only thing that is clear for now is that Squadron 42 will not easily escape its years-long spiral of uncertainty. Although players are looking forward to 2026 with hope, the possibility of another delay seems stronger than ever.
