Steam Early Access No More Mature Content
Steam, the world’s largest digital game store, is in the news with its new decisions. Valve, which has recently drawn attention for its restrictions on games with adult content, has now closed the door to such titles in the Early Access phase. This has piqued the curiosity of both independent developers and gamers.
New Restriction on Adult Content on Steam
Valve’s new policy reveals that adult-themed games will no longer be accepted into Steam’s Early Access process. The issue came to light when an application submitted by an independent developer named Dammitbird for their adult game “Heavy Hearts” was rejected. Valve’s statement stated, “A game with adult themes cannot be supported in the Early Access model.” This decision means that the game can only be added to the store as a full version.
This development is part of Valve’s long-standing policies. The company is forced to implement content restrictions, particularly due to the rules of payment providers. With updates released over the summer, stricter rules were introduced regarding the nature of games that can be published on Steam. These restrictions are shaped by the payment system’s standards.
A similar process isn’t limited to Steam. Itch.io recently took a similar step, removing several adult-themed games from its store. The platform stated that pressure from payment providers was behind this decision. In other words, payment partners appear to play a decisive role across the industry.
This situation has sparked significant debate in the gaming world. While developers argue that their creative freedom is being restricted, it appears that platforms consider these steps necessary to maintain their financial sustainability. For now, it remains to be seen whether Steam’s strict stance during the Early Access phase will be reflected in other categories in the future.
