The Reason for the PS5 Pro’s High Price
Sony responded to criticism of the PS5 Pro‘s high price. In particular, the fact that it costs $250 more than the PS5 Slim model has led to mixed reactions among gamers. Toshi Aoki, Sony’s Senior Chief Product Manager for PlayStation, explained why the price of the PS5 Pro is so high.
Why is the PS5 Pro More Expensive?
Following the PS5 Pro’s announcement, fans criticized Sony’s asking price of $700 (€800 in Europe), arguing that the graphical improvements didn’t make enough of a difference compared to the base model. While Sony offered many hardware improvements, including a huge boost in GPU performance, new upgrade technologies and two terabytes of SSD storage, it admitted that these differences were not perceived by gamers on video clips and small screens.
In an interview with IGN, Toshi Aoki noted that the graphical improvements offered by the PS5 Pro are best experienced directly due to its interactive nature. While this will be more clearly noticeable through gameplay, it remains weak in video demonstrations and raises more questions about Sony’s pricing.
What’s New for the PS5 Pro
Aoki noted that the PS5 Pro not only offers graphical improvements, but is also equipped with new technologies. He emphasized that the PS5 Pro features two terabytes of SSD, Wi-Fi 7, as well as major upgrades to SSD speed and PSSR (PlayStation Super Resolution) technology. Aoki also defended the decision to sell the disk drive separately to gamers. “The disk drive is an option for gamers. Not everyone may need a disk, so we offer the option to add it,” Aoki said.
Sony describes the PS5 Pro as “a complete package that caters to the most engaged gamers” and the combination of all these innovations justifies the price.
