The World’s Rarest Pokémon Card Sold for $4 Million

Pokémon cards, a favorite among collectors since 1996, have become a virtual investment in recent years. Prices of these cards, which have skyrocketed due to increased interest, particularly during the pandemic, saw the rarest of them trade for a record price recently.

Pokémon Pikachu Illustrator Card Breaks Record Again

On September 12, a Pikachu Illustrator card, put up for auction on eBay by renowned collector Smpratte, sold for $4 million. This PSA 9 card is considered the rarest known Pokémon card. Its value has increased over the years, fetching £44,000 in 2016 and £400,000 in 2023.

However, this sale isn’t the highest price the card has reached. In 2022, Logan Paul purchased a PSA 10-grade Pikachu Illustrator card that earned him a Guinness World Record for $5.275 million. To make this purchase, Paul traded in his own PSA 9-grade card for $1.2 million and paid an additional $4 million.

The Pikachu Illustrator’s high value is that it was given exclusively to winners of the 1998 CoroCoro Comic Illustration Contest in Japan. This means the card was never sold in regular packs. It’s estimated that only 39 copies exist worldwide, and only one of them is PSA 10-grade.

The rise of Pokémon cards in the collectible world continues. The demand for rare cards, in particular, is keeping the interest of both investors and fans alive. The recent sale is interpreted as a strong indicator that the value of these cards will continue to rise in the coming years.
