Ubisoft Changes the Formula of the Far Cry Series
Led by Ubisoft Montreal, Far Cry 7 (codenamed Blackbird) and Maverick were originally part of the same game. However, they are now two separate projects, with release dates pushed back to 2026.
A Departure from the Far Cry Formula
Far Cry 7 and Maverick aim to offer a new experience by moving away from the series’ usual formula. Maverick will be a survival-extraction game set in the Alaskan wilderness. Players will fight each other, wild animals, and harsh weather conditions.
On the other hand, Far Cry 7 will focus on the story of a character racing against time to save their family. The player’s family will be kidnapped by a cult that conducts psychedelic experiments on animals and children. He will need to save his family in 24 real-time hours.
Far Cry 7 and Maverick will feature significant updates to the movement system. New mechanics such as tactical running, sliding, and climbing will add depth to the gameplay. In addition, inventory management and loot systems will be improved.
While Ubisoft Montreal is optimistic about Far Cry 7, the future of Maverick remains uncertain. An internal memo suggests that there are some concerns about the future of the project. Still, Ubisoft seems determined to chart its own path rather than follow trends.
Far Cry fans may be excited about the new direction the series is taking. Far Cry 7 and Maverick have the potential to breathe new life into the series, but only time will tell how these changes will be received by players.
