What Did Obsidian Learn From The Outer Worlds?
The Outer Worlds 2, the long-awaited sequel, will be released on October 29th. Following the success of the first game, Obsidian Entertainment is determined to expand both the world and the gameplay mechanics. Studio executives candidly discuss what was missing from the first installment, while stating that The Outer Worlds 2 will offer more options, interaction, and role-playing depth this time around.
The Outer Worlds 2 Will Offer a Larger and More Responsive Universe
Director Brandon Adler says that the most significant feedback following the first installment was a desire for “larger spaces and longer gameplay.” Accordingly, the new installment has significantly expanded maps, questlines, and role-playing options. Adler emphasizes the game’s reactive world, saying, “It was very important to us that players feel like the characters they build truly impact the world.”
Creative director Leonard Boyarsky states that the technical and structural limitations of the first game are now gone. “We’re no longer afraid of one decision cutting 10 percent of the game,” Boyarsky says. “Because this time, we’ve designed a much larger universe.” The team took this opportunity to return to the series’ roots: its deep RPG elements.
Obsidian is offering much more freedom in character development and the dialogue system this time around. Players’ backgrounds, equipment, skill points, and decisions now shape not only the dialogue but also the reactions of the entire universe. This way, each player will have their own unique story.
Boyarsky says that despite the first game being shorter than expected, the immense love it received has motivated them. “We’ve been encouraged by how much players embraced the world and the characters,” he says. The Obsidian team now aims to build on this love with a larger, more detailed universe. The Outer Worlds 2 looks set to both preserve the spirit of the series and elevate Obsidian’s RPG legacy.
