What is the Latest Situation in Console Sales?
Competition in the console world continues at full speed. According to newly announced sales data, PlayStation 5 (PS5) managed to leave its predecessor PS4 behind with its performance in the market. According to research conducted in the United States, PS5 achieved 7% more sales compared to PS4 in the first 52 months of its release. While PS5 sold 75 million units globally, PS4’s total sales figure to date was recorded as 117.2 million.
Microsoft Lagged Behind in Console Sales
However, the situation is not so encouraging on the Xbox front. Xbox Series X|S achieved 19% less sales compared to Xbox One in the same sales period. While Xbox Series X|S’s total sales globally were around 32 million, Xbox One’s total sales were recorded as 57.9 million.
While the PS5’s success in leaving the PS4 behind is remarkable, the Xbox Series X|S’s failure to catch up with the Xbox One creates a worrying picture for Microsoft. While the PS5 is the leader in console sales, especially in the US market, it is stated that the Xbox Series X|S is having difficulty increasing its market share.
In addition to sales figures, there is a decline in general gaming hardware sales. According to February 2025 data, gaming hardware sales fell by 25% compared to the previous year, while accessory sales also decreased by 8%.
Sony’s sales success with the PS5 allows it to maintain its leadership in the console sector. On the Microsoft side, it is seen that new strategies are needed for the Xbox Series X|S to reach more players in the global market. It is eagerly awaited to see how this competition in the console world will evolve in the coming years. In addition to sales figures, new games and technological innovations seem to be decisive in this struggle.
