World of Warcraft Challenges FFXIV in Housing System
Blizzard has shared the first details about the housing system that World of Warcraft players have been waiting for for years. The new feature will be available with the game’s next expansion pack, “Midnight.” The system, which will include two separate housing areas for the Alliance and Horde, will allow players to build and customize their own homes. However, Blizzard states that it aims to differentiate this new feature from Final Fantasy XIV, one of the legendary housing systems of the MMO world.
World of Warcraft Housing System
Although Blizzard is late in the player housing system, it designs its own system by considering the problems experienced in rival games. While the housing system in Final Fantasy XIV has been criticized for problems such as high costs and limited land, Blizzard aims to eliminate such barriers.
Home ownership in World of Warcraft will not be tied to players’ in-game finances or limited land. Homes will also be preserved even when a subscription ends, ensuring players don’t have to worry about losing their property. “If a player wants a home in Azeroth, they can have one,” Blizzard’s development blog reads.
Players will be able to build homes in two different regions inspired by Elwynn Forest for the Alliance and the wastelands of Durotar for the Horde. Homes can be customized with in-game rewards or items that can be purchased from the store. The system will also allow players to use their own homes as social hubs.
Players will also be allowed to visit other faction regions. For example, a Night Elf can visit a Horde character’s home outside of their own faction region. This will add a new dimension to the game’s community-based structure.
Despite being criticized for delaying the housing system for years, Blizzard has learned from the experiences of rivals like Final Fantasy XIV and Elder Scrolls Online to design a more accessible and player-friendly system. World of Warcraft’s next expansion, Midnight, is expected to be released in late 2025 or early 2026, and players are eagerly awaiting what impact this delayed but ambitious housing system will have on Azeroth.
