Xbox Avatar Editor App Shutting Down in January
Microsoft has announced that it will shut down the Xbox Avatar Editor in January 2025. The company is making big changes to the Xbox Avatar system. With the retirement of the Xbox Avatar Editor app on January 9, 2025, avatars created with this app and all purchased items will also disappear.
Why Xbox Avatar Editor is being shut down?
According to Microsoft, the Xbox Avatar Editor is being shut down due to “low user interest”. This will allow the Xbox team to focus resources on “other player experiences”. From November 1, 2023 to January 9, 2025, all items purchased for avatars will be automatically refunded after the app is shut down.
Xbox Avatars aren’t going away completely, however. The Xbox Original Avatars app will continue to be available after January 9, 2025. This app features the original Xbox 360 Avatars introduced in 2008. These avatars, which are still available for Xbox 360 and some games, will continue to exist for the foreseeable future.
In early 2025, the end is in sight for the modern Xbox Avatar app. If you use your Xbox Avatar as your game art, now is the time to change it. Go to your profile, click on “change your game picture”, create a new one and select “Take a picture of my Avatar”. It’s worth taking a photo as a souvenir, as it will soon disappear completely.
