You Can Now Play DOOM In PDF
It has become a legend that DOOM can be played on any screen. This iconic game, which has been played on many different platforms from pregnancy tests to LEGO blocks, has now been ported to PDF files. GitHub user Ading2210 has brought this interesting project to life, enabling DOOM to be played in Chromium-based browsers in a PDF environment.
How Does DOOM Work in PDF?
Did you know that PDF files support JavaScript? Using an old version of Emscripten, Ading2210 managed to convert DOOM’s source code to asm.js. This code can run smoothly even in the limited JavaScript environment of modern PDF engines. The developer used a source code called “doomgeneric” to create a simple version of DOOM, and created a framebuffer with only input/output operations.
DOOM’s image in PDF was created with a very creative solution. A text field was assigned to each pixel row, creating a 6-color screen with ASCII characters. It is stated that the frame rate is updated every 80ms. Thanks to this, the game can be played smoothly even in a PDF.
This project proves once again that the platforms on which DOOM can be played are truly limitless. This interesting journey from pregnancy tests to Notepad and now to PDF files reveals the creativity of the developers. This work by Ading2210 is available under the name DoomPDF for those who want to try it in a browser.
