Zack Snyder, who brings the darker side of the DC universe to the big screen, has once again thrilled fans. The director shared a new still of Deathstroke, played by Joe Manganiello, on his Instagram account. This black-and-white photo evoked a nostalgic feeling and rekindled the question, “Is the SnyderVerse returning?”

In his post, Zack Snyder wrote, “I shot this with my Leica monochrome camera and 50mm dream lens. Thank you @joemanganiello for being such a great Deathstroke.” The photo quickly garnered thousands of likes, sparking hope among fans for a new SnyderVerse. The director’s cinematographic style and respect for the characters continue to have a strong impact on the DC community.

Joe Manganiello first appeared as Deathstroke in a special scene in Justice League. He was initially slated to return as the main antagonist in Ben Affleck’s The Batman, but this plan was scrapped when the project was transferred to Matt Reeves. Manganiello had previously explained in interviews that Affleck’s script was a dark psychological tale in the vein of “The Game,” with Deathstroke attempting to destroy Batman’s life from within.

The new post has rekindled discussion of Deathstroke’s future in the reshaped DC universe under James Gunn and Peter Safran. Last year, it was confirmed that Captain America: Brave New World screenwriter Matthew Orton was working on a film focusing on Deathstroke and Bane. This project keeps hopes alive that the character could return as a new version within the DCU.

Still, Snyder’s post is likely merely an artistic throwback. The director expressed his support for the DCU’s new direction last year, saying, “If the characters are treated mythologically accurately and respectfully, I’m all for it.” James Gunn also expressed his appreciation for Snyder’s approach on Threads.
