A 5-Man Team Saved The Division 2

The Division 2, a key player among Ubisoft’s live service games, once entered a precarious phase when content support nearly ceased. However, statements from Massive Entertainment revealed that the game was rescued from this impasse thanks to the efforts of a small team of five. This team ignited a transformation from zero content to a resurgence.

A Five-Person Team Resurrected The Division 2

Massive Entertainment’s art producer, Palle Hoffstein, shared on social media how The Division 2 was reborn. “There were only five of us to reboot Division 2. Five! I don’t know what we were thinking, but it was incredible,” Hoffstein said, expressing the challenges of the process. The small team’s goal wasn’t to give the game a few more years of life, but to create a more enduring future.

The team faced the biggest challenge during this process with staff planning. While Ubisoft studios typically plan their staff years in advance, this team, working to save The Division 2, operated as an “officially non-existent” unit. Despite this, they worked tirelessly to bring new content to the game.

The turning point in the game’s revival was the Resident Evil collaboration in 2024. Hoffstein explained that while he was perhaps alone on the D2 team at the time, he responded to requests for new events with a “yes.” This approach sparked new content and paved the way for further expansion of the game.

Today, Ubisoft has announced both short-term and long-term expansion plans for The Division 2. Furthermore, the mobile game The Division: Resurgence will further expand the series’ universe. All of this was made possible thanks to the tenacity and passion of a small team of five.
