A24’s Death Stranding Film Has an Unconventional Script

When the name Death Stranding is mentioned, the first thing that comes to mind is Hideo Kojima’s cinematic games. However, this time, there’s a different kind of excitement involved. A24’s Death Stranding film won’t be a perfect adaptation of the game’s story. Instead, it will feature a completely different story and original characters set in the same universe.

A New Story Begins in the Death Stranding Film

The film adaptation, announced in 2022, remained largely silent for a long time. However, in April 2025, the director’s name was revealed: Michael Sarnoski, known for A Quiet Place: Day One. The first concrete details about the film were shared at the recent Beyond the Strand event. Sarnoski confirmed that the story will remain faithful to the game’s universe but will be shaped by brand new characters and plot. This will transform the film from an ordinary game adaptation into a standalone cinematic experience.

Even in its early days, Death Stranding managed to feel like a movie. Kojima Productions’ first game, released in 2019, attracted attention with its star cast including Norman Reedus, Léa Seydoux, Mads Mikkelsen, and Troy Baker. Its cinematic visuals, atmosphere, and narrative sparked debates about whether it was a game or a movie. Now, with A24’s project, this debate is sure to take on a new dimension.

The new film will continue to explore the themes inherent in the game’s universe—loneliness, connection, and the struggle for survival. However, this time, the story will be told not through familiar protagonists, but through brand new characters. This will provide both new surprises for those familiar with the game and a standalone entry point for viewers unfamiliar with the series.

Meanwhile, Death Stranding 2: On The Beach, released just this past June, emerged as one of the most ambitious productions of the year. This success further fuels interest in the film. The biggest question is how the atmosphere Kojima Productions has captured in the games will translate to the big screen. Considering A24’s previous original and bold productions, the film has a strong chance of transcending the usual adaptation.

The Death Stranding film has the potential to both translate the game’s profound atmosphere into cinematic language and surprise audiences with a completely new story. It promises unexpected surprises for fans and a meaningful story for moviegoers. While details are currently being kept under wraps, this project is already being rumored to be one of the most remarkable game adaptations of the 2020s.
