One Million Players From Monster Hunter Wilds

Back in 2018, with the launch of Monster Hunter World, Capcom rolled out what would eventually become its best selling game in history. Alongside a huge commercial success, the action RPG was also the recipient of widespread critical acclaim and a host of major award recognitions. Thanks to this incredible performance, its successor, Monster Hunter Wilds, became an eagerly awaited title as soon as it was announced in December 2023. When the devs conducted the game’s open beta, the first of which originally started in October 2024, Steam witnessed a massive number of Monster Hunter enthusiasts join in. Now that the monster taming title is finally out, that number has gone further up, breaching the one million mark in no time.

In the first day of it’s release, Monster Hunter Wilds has reached a peak concurrent player count of 1,305,812 on Steam. In doing so, it has become the second most-played Steam game of all time, only behind the wildly popular multiplayer FPS Counter-Strike 2, which boasts a peak of over 1.8 million users. Moreover, the latest Monster Hunter game has also debuted at number one on the list of Steam’s top-selling titles in terms of revenue. In comparison, Monster Hunter World, which hit Valve’s platform more than six months after its console launch, only ever reached a peak of 334.6K concurrent players at the height of its popularity.

Given that Monster Hunter Wilds is also available on PS5 and Xbox Series X/S, platforms that do not offer access to player engagement stats the same way, its aggregate concurrent player count is understandably much higher than the number on Steam. This assumption is consolidated by the fact that Capcom’s big release currently ranks fourth among the top-10 games on the PS Store in the US.

While the instant popularity of Monster Hunter Wilds on Steam is nothing short of impressive, it might be tricky to say the same about its reviews on the platform. Currently, it has “Mixed” overall reviews based on feedback from 9,017 players. Out of these, only 47% of the user reviews for the game are positive, seemingly because of certain optimization issues that players who gave it a thumbs down have mentioned facing. As the Monster Hunter Wilds devs follow the usual industry practice of addressing these issues with timely updates, the game’s Steam rating could be expected to improve over time.
