AMD Makes Big Move for 4K Gaming as GPU Sales Fall

AMD is preparing to make a strong debut in the gaming world with the Radeon RX 9000 series graphics cards it introduced at CES 2025. The RX 9070 and RX 9070 XT models, which will be released in March, aim to provide a high-quality gaming experience at 4K resolution. However, the company is struggling with the low sales performance of current-generation GPUs.

4K Gaming with AMD Radeon RX 9000 Series

AMD’s new-generation graphics cards are positioned to compete specifically with the RTX 4070 series. The RX 9070 and RX 9070 XT models are powered by AMD’s RDNA 4 architecture. These new cards use the 4nm TSMC production process for better energy efficiency and offer improved ray tracing performance. In addition, AMD’s FidelityFX Super Resolution (FSR) 4 technology draws attention with its AI-supported upscaling algorithms for a smoother and higher-quality gaming experience.

AMD plans to target “mainstream” gamers with these cards. However, prices are expected to be in a similar range to high-end models like the RTX 4070 Ti. This suggests that the cards will be launched at a cost approaching console prices.

AMD’s RX 7000 series did not receive the expected attention in the market. According to the Steam Hardware Survey, the RX 7000 series cards did not find a place among the 50 most popular GPUs. The company’s gaming division earned $563 million, a 59% decrease in revenue compared to the same period last year. However, Nvidia’s market share is still quite strong, and AMD faces serious competition in this area.

The fact that Nvidia’s new generation RTX 50 series cards do not offer major leaps could create an opportunity for AMD. The company aims to increase its market share with the affordable and performance-oriented RX 9000 series. In particular, the AI-supported FSR 4 technology and improvements in energy efficiency could help AMD stand out from the competition. As AMD looks to make a strong comeback with its next-gen GPUs, gamers are eagerly awaiting the performance and pricing of these cards. The RX 9000 series, which is set to launch in March, could change the course of the market.
