AMD Ryzen 9 9950X3D Disappointing in Gaming?

AMD’s new generation Ryzen 9 9950X3D processor, introduced at CES 2025, is being launched with high expectations. However, AMD announced that this processor may not provide a significant advantage over its predecessor Ryzen 7 9800X3D in gaming performance. Despite being equipped with more cores and higher clock speeds, it is stated that Ryzen 9 9950X3D will not be able to leave its predecessor behind in some games.

AMD Ryzen 9 9950X3D Disappointing in Gaming?

Ryzen 9 9950X3D Performance

Ryzen 9 9950X3D draws attention with its 16 cores and boost frequency of up to 5.7 GHz. In contrast, Ryzen 7 9800X3D’s single CCD (core chip) design allows it to provide superior performance in many games. AMD official Martijn Boonstra stated that the new processors may perform better in some games, but the overall gaming experience will be similar to the 9800X3D.

While the extra core count provides an advantage in games that support multi-core workloads, many modern games still run more efficiently on single CCD designs. Despite the higher core count, the Ryzen 9 9950X3D has a more aggressive energy consumption profile due to its 170W TDP. The Ryzen 7 9800X3D stands out as a more efficient option with its 120W TDP.

AMD’s suggested price for the 9950X3D is expected to be $729, which is a significant price difference compared to the Ryzen 7 9800X3D at $479. However, if it offers similar performance, users are likely to switch to the older model. AMD claims that the new processors offer a 20% performance advantage over Intel’s Core Ultra 200S series, but it is clear that price-performance balance will be an important criterion for gamers.

AMD’s Ryzen 9 9950X3D processor looks impressive with its specifications, but it may be overshadowed by its predecessor, the 9800X3D, in gaming performance. This may make users think more about which processor to choose.
