Anbernic Will Sell DS Copy for Cheaper Than Original

Retro handheld console manufacturer Anbernic is preparing to revive the spirit of the Nintendo DS. The company has shared images of its new dual-screen device, the RG DS. Able to run both Nintendo DS and 3DS games, this model will reportedly cost under $100. Anbernic aims to bring Nintendo’s classic handheld console to gamers with a modern twist at a much lower price.

Anbernic RG DS Brings the Nintendo DS Experience to the Modern Age

In a promotional video shared by Anbernic, the RG DS is seen smoothly running touch-enabled games like Kirby: Canvas Curse and Shovel Knight. While the device supports DS and 3DS emulations, it won’t include the 3DS’s glasses-free 3D feature. This means it will offer a technically simpler, yet much more accessible, portable console experience.

Processor specifications and a release date haven’t been released yet, but the company confirmed the device will be available in four colors: red, blue, white, and transparent white. Anbernic stated that the price will be kept under $100, which is notably lower than the original Nintendo DS, which launched in 2004 at $149.99.

The RG DS is particularly aimed at retro game enthusiasts. Anbernic has gained significant popularity in recent years with its affordable portable emulator devices. Competitors like Ayaneo and GPD are launching similar dual-screen devices at much higher prices. For example, Ayaneo’s Flip 1S DS starts at $999, while the Pocket DS starts at $519.

This distinction makes the RG DS highly attractive to retro enthusiasts. Furthermore, Anbernic’s preference for Linux-based systems in its devices allows users to customize the software and interface. This ensures that RG DS is not just an imitation, but an alternative that reinterprets the original DS experience with a modern and flexible structure.
