Another DCU Movie Cancelled
DC Studios co-chairman and Superman director James Gunn has openly explained why a previously announced DCU film, which was already in development, was shelved. Despite the involvement of a successful director and screenwriter, the lack of a good script was the deciding factor in the project’s termination.
James Gunn Says “Not Good Enough” Script Was the Decisive Factor
In an interview with NPR, Gunn stated that the script’s lack of development was the primary reason for the cancellation. He stated that while second and third drafts of the film had been written, the script hadn’t made any progress, summarizing the situation with the words, “We can’t make this movie because it’s not good.” Even the involvement of good actors couldn’t salvage the script’s inadequacy.
Gunn stated that a bad film would make the director, screenwriter, and studio look bad, and everyone would ultimately be unhappy. Therefore, he emphasized that it was more prudent to cancel early on. In his words, “If we make this movie, everyone will suffer.”
While the canceled film hasn’t been officially announced, initial speculation focused on Luca Guadagnino’s SGT. Rock, starring Colin Farrell. However, Gunn confirmed that the project is still ongoing, suggesting that the canceled film is most likely Swamp Thing, with director James Mangold attached.
Gunn also noted that it’s rare for a major studio to cancel a project this far into the future. This is because the industry generally tends to seek everyone’s approval and doesn’t want to disappoint anyone. However, Gunn believes this approach is becoming a detrimental habit for creating good films.
