Armored Core Classics on Modern Consoles
FromSoftware’s legendary mecha series Armored Core’s prequels have been released digitally on PS4 and PS5 for PlayStation Plus Premium subscribers. The series’ first game and its expansions Project Phantasma and Master of Arena are still impressive visually and gameplay-wise despite their 30-year history. However, these new versions are missing some important features.
Deficiencies in Modern Versions of Armored Core
In the original PlayStation versions of Armored Core, players could enhance their gameplay with a system called “Human PLUS”. This feature provided great advantages to the game by increasing the player’s character’s abilities if they went into debt. In addition, the expansions included the ability to transfer save files from previous games. However, these features are currently unavailable in modern PlayStation versions.
The lack of save file transfer means that some special parts, especially for Project Phantasma and Master of Arena, are inaccessible. The developer team Implicit Conversions stated that they are aware of these shortcomings and that they will be fixed in a future update.
Armored Core being ported to modern consoles is a great opportunity for retro game fans. Retro graphics that look brighter and clearer on high-resolution screens offer players a nostalgic experience. The series’ customization mechanics and fast-paced mecha combat provide impressive gameplay even today.
