AI technology has taken center stage in the gaming world in recent years, but seeing a game developed entirely by AI is still unusual. The AI-generated game demo shared by entrepreneur Matt Shumer may be considered a first in this field. However, instead of revolutionizing the game as anticipated, the footage shown divided players.
AI Games Launched More Controversial Than Expected
The game Shumer introduced was touted as an action experience built from the ground up by AI. However, in the footage, the game suddenly switches from first-person to third-person, cityscapes are distorted in strange ways, and the physics engine barely functions. Many players likened these chaotic scenes to a “broken dream.”
The video, shared on social media, quickly sparked a storm of controversy. While some saw the experiment as “the first step in the future,” others criticized it as “an artificial creation that cannot replace human creativity.” Some comments described the video as “a complete disaster,” while others expressed hope, saying, “These flaws will be eliminated in a few years.”
Opinions in the gaming press were also divided. Some critics argued that AI should only be a tool to assist in the development process, while a Destructoid writer emphasized the limitations of such projects, saying, “AI can speed things up, but it’s the human touch that gives a game its soul.”
Matt Shumer, however, remained resolute despite the criticism. He dismissed the criticism by saying, “This is just the beginning. AI games will be incredible in the future.” For now, however, the example presented proves that AI still has a long way to go in game production.
